THE DEBUTANTE BALLS OF NEW YORK, LONDON, PARIS AND VIENNA

As of 29 October 2026

A debutante ball is an evening built around a presentation: young women introduced one at a time, each on the arm of an escort, and then the dancing. Four cities keep the custom best. New York has two such balls in the Almanac, London one, Paris one, and Vienna opens its Opera Ball with a committee of young couples.

This guide describes each ball as its organiser and the Court’s engagement page describe it. Two have published their 2027 dates: the Piarist Debutante Ball in New York and the Vienna Opera Ball. The International Debutante Ball and le Bal have published the dates of their 2026 balls, which the Court gives; Queen Charlotte’s Ball has not yet published its next.

New York: The Piarist Debutante Ball

The Piarist Debutante Ball is on 30 January 2027 at the University Club, 1 West 54th Street, New York.

The ball runs from six in the evening until one in the morning. Dinner in the Grand Ballroom at seven is for ticketed dinner guests only. A jazz quartet plays through the cocktail hour, the American and Hungarian colours are presented at a quarter to nine, the committee is introduced at nine and the opening Csárdás is danced. At five past nine the debutantes are presented, one at a time, by name, and the opening waltz follows. At half past ten comes the Grand Palotás, the processional dance of the Hungarian nobility, performed by the Hungarian Scouts of New Brunswick.

Everything raised goes to the Piarist schools in Hungary. The ball has been held for more than sixty years, with a gap, and the New York Hungarians brought it back.

Dress: white tie, with black tie also permitted. The organiser keeps what it calls a very strict dress code, and says that escorts of the debutantes must wear tails and white gloves.

New York: The International Debutante Ball

The International Debutante Ball is held between Christmas and the New Year. The organiser has published its 2026 ball, on Tuesday 29 December 2026; the 2027 date is to follow.

The organiser says debutantes “traditionally wear white, floor length evening gowns”, with white elbow-length gloves if the dress is strapless or cap-sleeved, and that each is “escorted by a young man for their presentation”; the committee can assign one. The Court’s page records that the ball was founded in 1954 by Beatrice Dinsmore Joyce and that the Lester Lanin Orchestra has played at every ball since.

Dress: white tie. Fathers and escorts wear “full evening dress (black tail coat, black trousers, white shirt with pique front, white pique vest, white tie and, for the escorts, white gloves as well)”.

Paris: Bal des Débutantes

Bal des Débutantes, known in Paris as le Bal, falls on the last Saturday of November; the 2026 ball is on 28 November, and the 2027 date is to follow. About twenty young women are presented, each in haute couture lent by a fashion house and on the arm of a cavalier, introduced one by one in alphabetical order; dinner and a ball follow, in aid of charity. Ophélie Renouard created it in 1994 and runs it still. There are no tickets: one attends only at the organiser’s invitation.

Dress, as the Court’s page gives it: black tie.

London: Queen Charlotte’s Ball

Queen Charlotte’s Ball is the debutante ball of the London Season, held on a Saturday at the end of summer by The London Season, a voluntary, non-profit organisation. It is dated to 1780, when George III gave a ball for Queen Charlotte’s birthday; it lapsed in 1976 and returned in 2009. Debutantes are limited to twenty-two a year and guests to 150, and places are by personal invitation. The 2027 date and venue have not been published.

The organiser describes the debutantes’ year as “a year-long journey of personal growth, cultural immersion, and charitable engagement”, with training “in etiquette, diplomacy, and social grace”. Dress: white tie, which the organiser gives strictly, with decorations, and long gowns for ladies.

Vienna: the opening of the Opera Ball

The Vienna Opera Ball is on 4 February 2027, its 69th edition; the doors open at 20:15 and the opening begins at 22:00. It is opened by a committee of some hundred and fifty couples, the women in white with long gloves and tiaras, the men in tails, each opening the ball for the first time. They come down a staircase built on the stage, dance a polonaise and finish on the Blue Danube, before “Alles Walzer” is called.

Dress: white tie.
