The Dubai World Cup is run on the last Saturday of March at Meydan. As of October 2026, its nine races for 2027 carry US$30.5 million in prize money, US$12 million of it for the World Cup itself. They run across the afternoon and evening.

There is no betting on any of it.

The Recruitment

In 1996 Dubai had a racecourse at Nad Al Sheba and no reputation whatever.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum put four million dollars on a single race and then went and got a horse to make it matter. Cigar was the best animal in America, on a winning streak that had reached thirteen, and there was no reason at all for his connections to fly him to the Gulf. His trainer, Bill Mott, described the journey as a trip to the moon.

They went. Cigar won it under Jerry Bailey, and the race existed from that afternoon. Eleven horses ran in the first edition. Leading horses from around the world have run in every one since.

Nad Al Sheba held it until 2009 and was also the first home of Godolphin. In 2010 the whole operation moved to Meydan, which is Arabic for meeting place, and which has a grandstand a mile long.

The Absence of a Bet

Almost every racecourse in the world is funded by gambling. Prize money comes from a levy on what is wagered, which means the size of a purse is ultimately decided by how many people bet on it.

Betting is illegal in the United Arab Emirates. There is none at Meydan, on any race, and there never has been. A free prediction competition is run instead, for prizes.

Which makes the Dubai World Cup, with the Saudi Cup, one of the only great races in the world not paid for by the people watching them. The money is simply put up, by one family, because they decided the race ought to exist.

That is worth sitting with, because it changes what the race is. Everywhere else a purse reflects demand. Here it reflects intent.

What to Know

The first race is run in the afternoon sun, at about a quarter to four, and the World Cup closes the card in the evening, when the heat has gone.

The surface has changed twice. Dirt from 1996, a synthetic called Tapeta from 2010, and back to dirt in 2015, because the Americans would not send horses to run on something they had not trained on.

Nine races, and the World Cup is the last of them. The card carries the Dubai Turf, the Sheema Classic and the Golden Shaheen, any one of which would headline a meeting elsewhere.

The dress is smart and modest, and the rules are enforced: no shorts, sportswear or trainers, and hats are encouraged rather than required.

It closes a season rather than opening one. The carnival runs from November into March, and the World Cup follows its last meeting a fortnight later as the season’s finale.

When is the Dubai World Cup 2027?

The 31st Dubai World Cup is on Saturday 27 March 2027 at Meydan Racecourse. Gates open at noon and the first race is at about 3.45pm; the World Cup itself closes the card in the evening. It follows the Dubai Racing Carnival, which runs from 6 November 2026 to 12 March 2027.

What is the dress code for the Dubai World Cup?

Dubai Racing Club calls World Cup day its most refined dress code of the season: smart attire, formal suits or national dress for gentlemen, modest dresses or skirts for ladies, and hats or fascinators strongly encouraged. Shorts, sportswear, ripped jeans, tank tops, trainers and flip-flops are not permitted. The Court wears a lounge suit.

How many races are run on Dubai World Cup day, and for how much?

Nine Group races, typically six Group 1 and three Group 2. As of October 2026, for 2027, they carry a combined US$30.5 million, with US$12 million for the Dubai World Cup itself. The card includes the Dubai Sheema Classic, the Dubai Turf, the Al Quoz Sprint and the Godolphin Mile.

When do Dubai World Cup 2027 tickets go on sale?

Dubai Racing Club lists tickets for the 2027 Dubai World Cup as on sale from 31 August 2026, in General Admission and hospitality tiers, sold through dubairacingclub.com. Parking is free and included with a ticket; General Admission enters by Gate 1 and hospitality by Gate 3.

The Court

The Dubai World Cup is not the Court’s own. Boxes, enclosure access and rooms in the city are sought on a member’s behalf, and the Court arranges the whole of it: getting there, where to stay, and the table afterwards. The Desert Classic in January and the boat show in November sit in the same city’s year.
